African development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Digital Stories by Disabled People

SummaryText
According to the Secretariat of the African Decade of Persons with Disabilities (SADPD), in Africa persons with disabilities continue to face barriers that prevent them from participating as equals in society. To raise awareness of this issue, SADPD produced a series of digital stories of and with persons with disabilities, which portray the real life challenges and successes of parents of children with disabilities and youth with disabilities to claim their rights. The stories were made in South Africa at a workshop with participants from South Africa, Senegal, Tanzania, Kenya, Ethiopia, Uganda, Zimbabwe, Nigeria, and Mozambique, and were made by the storytellers themselves in their own voices. The stories can be accessed on You Tube, and those interested may also contact SADPD for a copy of the DVD. SADPD hopes that these stories will serve as encouragement to those who face similar challenges and inspire those who can make a difference to do so and to honour the rights of persons with disabilities as set out in the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (UNCRPD).
