African development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Organised by eLearning Africa, the 2014 "Through Your Lens" Photo Competition is being held under the theme "Social Africa: Building Bridges through ICT." Photographers are invited to submit snapshots depicting how information and communication technology (ICT) is enhancing the way individuals and communities in Africa live, learn, cooperate, and connect. The photo should show how communication tools and information technologies can build bridges and foster relationships between people and should be accompanied by a brief description outlining the inspiration behind their idea.

This photo competition is organised as part of eLearning Africa 2014, taking place from May 28 to 30 2014 in Kampala, Uganda. The annual conference is focuses on ICT-enhanced education and training in Africa, and is intended to give participants an opportunity to develop multinational and cross-industry contacts and partnerships, as well as to enhance their knowledge, expertise and abilities.

The photo competition winners will be picked by an expert panel of judges and a public vote, and prizes include a tablet pc, a digital camera, and an mp3 player. Participation is free and a selection of the submitted photos will feature in an exhibition at this year’s eLearning Africa conference.

All eligible photos submitted to the competition can be viewed and voted on via the “Through your Lens” Facebook application or by visiting the online “Through your Lens” photo gallery.
