OPENPhoto Competition 2013

The Open Society Initiative for Southern Africa (OSISA) has announced the launch of OPENPhoto 2013, which is looking for strong, interpretive documentary work on the theme of Victories and Violations: The Struggle for Minority Rights in Africa. The competition is designed to encourage analytical and critical thinking about society in Africa and support the development of photojournalism across the continent.
According to OSISA, while the inaugural competition focused on inequality in Africa, OPENPhoto II will look at the situation of Africa's minorities: how they are struggling and succeeding in societies that often see them – and treat them – as 'different'. Across Africa, many people are marginalised and socially excluded because they are minorities. People are discriminated against because they are disabled or homosexual or indigenous or sex workers, or because they are women living with HIV, or men from a small ethnic group, or children from a non-state religion, or families fleeing persecution in another country.

OpenPhoto II will recognise photographers based in Africa whose work highlights the struggles and successes of minority communities and individuals across the continent. Entrants must live more than six months of the year on the continent. The competition is open to professional and amateur photographers, 18 years or older. First Prize USD 5,000 plus a commissioned work from OSISA, second prize USD 2,000, and third prize USD 1,000 in cash.
