African development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

SummaryText
This book, a series of three for three age groups - grades 4-5, 6-7, 8-9- - forms part of the Government of Zambia’ s comprehensive strategy for sexual and reproductive health and HIV education for young people in and out of school.

The books aim to provide information about puberty, friendship, gender, sexuality, pregnancy, sexually transmitted infections, HIV/AIDS, and drug use. They contain learning activities and illustrations which aim to engage young people and promote an understanding of themselves and their world. According to the organisers, the books allow readers to reflect on values and improve on skills needed to develop caring and loving relationships, make good decisions, solve problems, and seek help.

The topics and activities were designed to be used as part of the Zambian national curriculum or as part of extra curricular activities in or out of school. The books are accompanied by a Teachers' Guide linked below as a related summary.
