African development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at lainiciativadecomunicacion.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Initiative for Leadership and Democracy in Africa (iLEDA)

Launched in 2011, the Initiative for Leadership and Democracy in Africa (iLEDA) is working to strengthen democracy in Africa by preparing a new generation of civic and political leaders to be effective agents of change. iLeda provides training to different key audiences with tailor made curriculums designed for reach. The project is led by Idasa, the African Forum, and the Netherlands Institute for Multiparty Democracy (NIMD), with support from the Royal Danish Embassy, the Royal Norwegian Embassy, the Embassy of Ireland, the Embassy of Finland, and the Glyn Berry Programme.

Communication Strategies

iLEDA's training focuses on strengthening democratic leadership throughout the continent by fortifying democratic values, skills, and knowledge of citizen leaders, political leaders, young people with potential, political party youth wings, and others. Training focuses on citizen agency, constructive and collaborative relations between (local) governance structures and citizen representations, political organising, peaceful resolutions to conflict and elections, governance challenges, sustainability challenges, hard political skills, theory, and other relevant topics. Experiential learning, study circles, participatory learning, projects, and field trips are all central to iLeda’s methodology.

iLEDA offers several training products, all with a different audiences in mind and witha different curriculum, but all working towards the same goal: a prospering democratic Africa with active citizens and representatives of peoples at its heart. iLEDA is currently running the following activities.

  • iLEDA School for citizen leaders
  • iLEDA Academy for a new generation of democratic political leaders
  • iLEDA Services, offering tailor-made consulting on training, democracy education, and leadership
  • iLEDA Network, offering trainees follow-up support and peer-to-peer sharing in addition to a growing continental network of democratic practitioners.

The iLEDA journal is distributed to the iLEDA network across Africa, including training alumni, trainers, partner organisations, and anybody who is interested in their work. The iLEDA journal is a strategy for informing the network about progress, achievements, and recent events. It provides information about on-going activities, planned work, and events, as well as ideas and analysis arising from iLeda's work.
