SummaryText
This set of guidelines was produced by the Department of Basic Education (DBE) in South Africa to optimise the effectiveness of peer education in schools, as well as harmonise approaches across provinces and schools. According to the (DBE) , peer education is an effective approach or strategy to influence peer group norms – a now well established risk factor for HIV and many other risk behaviours. However, despite the substantive experience of applying peer education within the education system, approaches have been fragmented and unevenly applied across the country. The document offers broad guidelines for the planning, implementation, monitoring, and evaluation of peer education programmes, and sets out a minimum set of standards.
The guidelines are primarily intended for use by individuals and/or organisations involved in the management and implementation of peer education programmes in schools. These include members of the DBE at national, provincial, and district levels, non-governmental organisations (NGOs), and donor organisations tasked with the management and oversight of such programmes. Members of school-based support teams (SBSTs), educators, peer educators, and peer mentors will also benefit from the guidelines. The Guidelines were developed with the financial support of the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) and underwent consultations with national and provincial education departments and a range of stakeholders.
The guidelines include the following manuals:
Guidelines for the Implementation of Peer Education Programmes for Learners in South African Schools - Guide For Programme Managers
Guidelines for the Implementation of Peer Education Programmes for Learners in South African Schools - Participant Training Manual
Guidelines for the Implementation of Peer Education Programmes for Learners in South African Schools - Facilitators Manual
