After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.
 
Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.
 
We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

HIV/AIDS and HEALTH COMMUNICATION

1. Planning and Implementing Social and Behaviour Change Communication Course (May 30 - June 3 2011) Johannesburg, South Africa
This course forms part of a series of social and behaviour change communication (SBCC) short courses within the University of Witwatersrand's Masters of Public Health programme, which have been developed by the Soul City Institute for Health and Development Communication and the University of Witwatersrand, School of Public Health. The course seeks to build skills in designing health communication programmes, specifically in conducting formative research, understanding different target populations, and developing programme goals and objectives.

2. Social and Behaviour Change Communication Approaches (July 4 - July 8 2011) Johannesburg, South Africa
This course also forms part of the Soul City Institute for Health and Development Communication and the University of Witwatersrand, School of Public Health series of SBCC short courses. The course seeks to develop the capacity of participants to gain a deeper understanding of different communication approaches, "methods" or strategies such as: peer education, advocacy, edutainment, social marketing and social mobilisation for enhancing and fostering social and behaviour change.

3. Behaviour Change and Communication in HIV/AIDS (July 11 - 22 2011) Nairobi, Kenya
This course, run by the African Medical and Research Foundation (AMREF), is intended to: assist a diverse audience of health and health related professionals in public, private, and community sectors, to develop skills and strategies to prevent or reduce behaviours that place persons at risk for STD or HIV infections.

4. Health Education and Promotion (March 21 - April 1 2011) Nairobi, Kenya
The general objective of this course, run by AMREF, is to develop relevant competencies of participants to design and implement health promotion interventions in their countries, organisations, or communities.

5. Developing Advocacy Strategies for Sexual and Reproductive Health and HIV & AIDS (August 1 - 5 2011) Nairobi, Kenya
Developing Advocacy Strategies for Sexual and Reproductive Health and HIV & AIDS (August 1 - 5 2011) Nairobi, Kenya
This two-week course, run by the Centre for African Family Studies (CAFS), seeks to provide hands-on experience in designing, developing, and setting indicators for monitoring and evaluating an advocacy campaign and strategy aimed at influencing policy change.

6. Designing and Managing HIV and AIDS Programmes in Sub-Saharan Africa (June 6 - 15 2011) Kampala, Uganda
According to the organisers, the Regional Capacity Building Partners (RECABIP), while prevention of HIV infection remains the most important approach to the control of the HIV and AIDS epidemic, care and support for the infected and affected is becoming crucial, as is the need for designing longer-term integrated HIV and AIDS programmes. This course is designed to equip participants with practical strategic management skills for developing effective interventions to address HIV and AIDS prevention, treatment, care, and support issues.

DEMOCRACY AND GOVERNANCE

7. Accountability Course 2011 (September 19 - 30 2011) Arusha, Tanzania
According to MS-TCDC, by the end of the course participants should understand key issues and concepts, and appreciate the skills and resources required in accountability work. Participants should be able to formulate plans and advise civil society organisations on approaches and strategies for promoting accountability at both the national and local levels in the pursuit of greater accountability in governance.

8. Anti-Corruption Course 2011 (August 8 - 19 2011) Arusha, Tanzania
According MS-TCDC, by the end of the course participants will have acquired competencies to combat corruption through a better understanding of the concepts and causes of corruption, the impact of corruption, and intervention strategies for redress. They will also be able to design and implement appropriate anti-corruption programmes and campaigns.

9. Natural Resource Management and Governance Course 2011 (September 12 - 23 2011) Arusha, Tanzania
This course by MS-TCDC seeks to give participants the understanding, knowledge, and skills to involve all relevant stakeholders in natural resource management project designing and management.

RIGHTS

10. Sexual Minority Rights Course (April 11 - 15 2011) Pretoria, South Africa
Part of the Good Governance Programme (GGP) at the Centre for Human Rights at the University of Pretoria in South Africa, this course is designed for government officials, members of civil society, academics, and legal practitioners from around Africa. The course is not primarily for people from lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and intersex (LGBTI) communities or activists, but for "mainstream" non-governmental organisations and others who may need information, awareness raising, and capacity on the issues involved.

11. Child Rights Course (May 9 - 13 2011) Arusha, Tanzania
According to the organisers of this workshop, MS-TCDC, by the end of the course, participants will have a deeper understanding of child rights and be able to apply those rights in practice when working with younger children.

12. Policy Analysis, Advocacy and Human Rights: An International Capacity Building Workshop (March 14 - 18 2011) Nairobi, Kenya
The overall objective of this training, organised by Regional Capacity Building Partners (RECABIP), is to foster the acquisition of practical skills and shared understanding of the concept, practice, and principles of policy analysis, advocacy, and human rights in development work.

13. Land Rights and Climate Change Course (March 21 - April 1 2011) Arusha, Tanzania
According to the organisers of this workshop, MS-TCDC, by the end of the course, the participants will have a deeper understanding of the nature of land rights, food rights and necessary climate change adaptations. They will also be more confident in dealing with a number of land rights issues – especially effects on food security for poor people - using a number of tools for analysis and advocacy purposes.

GENDER

14. Training for Engaging Men and Boys in Achieving Gender Equality and Health Equity (February 24 - 25 2011) Pretoria, South Africa
Sonke Gender Justice Network's Policy, Advocacy and Research Unit and the World Health Organization (WHO)'s Department of Women, Gender and Health invites applications for a 2-day training on engaging men and boys to achieve gender equality and health equity.

15. Feminist Tech Exchange: Digital Storytelling for Transformation (March 7 - 9 2011) Johannesburg, South Africa
Women’sNet is calling for applications from interested women, women’s organisations, and human rights activists to participate in a capacity strengthening programme focusing on digital storytelling as a tool for transformation. This year’s empowerment training provides participants with an opportunity to use the art of storytelling and journalism techniques to talk about ICT and violence against women.

16. Gender and Human Rights (July 18 - 22 2011) Arusha, Tanzania
According to the organisers of this workshop, MSTCDC, by the end of the course, participants will have developed an understanding of gender and other related concepts; obtained knowledge about the key principles of gender mainstreaming; explored power relations and barriers to asserting rights by marginalised groups – especially women - as well as acquired skills in gender analysis and budgeting.

MEDIA AND DEVELOPMENT COMMUNICATION

17. Minority and Indigenous Peoples Media Skills Training (March 21 - 25 2011) Yaoundé, Cameroon
This training, offered by Minority Rights Group International (MRG), aims to equip minority and indigenous peoples' activists (individuals and NGOs) with media skills to generate their own information and to interact with local, regional, and international media especially in the European Union.

18. Capacity-building Workshop for African Press Officers (June 28 2011) World Conference of Science Journalists, Cairo, Egypt
This all-day event aims to improve media coverage relating to African science, particularly in the fields of science and medicine, by providing targeted training and networking for press officers from African research institutes. It will utilise the expertise of top press officers and journalists to offer advice, discussions and networking opportunities, specifically tailored to the African situation.

19. Financial and Economic Reporting Course (May 9 - 13 2011) Lagos, Nigeria
This course, organised by the Thomson Reuters Foundation and Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (NORAD), is designed to help journalists in Western Africa to strengthen their reporting on financial and economic topics by developing their understanding and skills. In-depth discussions will explore ways of tackling subjects such as resource exploitation, economic governance, and capital flight from developing countries.

20. Reporting on Corruption (June 1 - 3 2011) Cape Town, South Africa
This course, organised by the Institute for the Advancement of Journalism (IAJ), is designed to assist journalists to develop a solid framework from which to investigate and report what organisers describe as the complex and tricky field of corruption in South Africa. The programme will introduce participants to the conceptual issues and debates informing current frameworks for analysing corruption and anti-corruption.

21. The Ethics for Reporting Race, Gender, and Xenophobia (June 22 - 24 2011) Johannesburg, South Africa
This course, organised by the IAJ, will look at how journalism can be used as a tool to fight racism, sexism, and xenophobia, and as a tool to build a truly non-racial, non-sexist, and xenophobia-free society. Designed to develop sensitivity about reporting on these issues and to equip participants with the tools they need to do so, the training will look at how to identify stories, as well as how to access relevant sources.

INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGIES (ICTS)

22. Information Technology and Social Media Course (May 2 - 4 2011) Arusha, Tanzania
According to MS-TCDC, by the end of the course, participants will have enhanced their ability to assess, plan, and make information technology related investment decisions to optimise organisational value and be able to use social media skills (face-book, twitter etc.) in key management processes.

ADVOCACY, SOCIAL MOBILISATION, AND CAMPAIGNING

23. Social Movements - Seminar (April 18 - 20 2011) Arusha, Tanzania
This seminar, run by MS-TCDC, seeks to bring together 30 – 70 development practitioners from across civil society, government, the private sector, and academia to discuss and reflect on the issue of social movements. Through well structured reflective processes, the seminar intends to generate new learning and insight for future use in various areas.

24. Advocacy Skills Course (October 10 - 14 2011) Nairobi, Kenya
The purpose of this course, run by AMREF, is to empower the participants with advocacy and lobbying skills in order to advocate for health and health related issues.

25. Policy Analysis and Advocacy (March 28 - April 8 2011) Arusha, Tanzania
According to MS-TCDC, by the end of the course, participants will have acquired skills that will enable them to influence public policies effectively, and to design and implement advocacy strategies and campaigns.

26. Campaigning for Change Course (October 10 - 14 2011) Arusha, Tanzania
By the end of this course, run by MS-TCDC, participants will have developed skills and expertise in designing and implementing a campaign for change intervention successfully. They will have acquired very concrete tools and looked at specific powerful campaigns for change. They will also know and master key critical elements of the campaign life cycle.
