African development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at lainiciativadecomunicacion.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

SummaryText
Rhodes University in South Africa has released a practical training handbook for African media managers and senior journalists. The handbook, entitled Signpost, was developed using the experiences and feedback of African editors during six short management training courses at Rhodes University in 2001.

The courses and handbook were underwritten by the Nordic SADC Journalism Center (NSJ) (recently renamed the Southern African Media Training Centre), which is based in Mozambique, as part of a regional initiative to strengthen the independent media by boosting management and advertising skills.

The handbook includes chapters on the latest practical Internet, management, personnel, and advertising techniques, as well as in-depth strategies for improving newsroom management, motivating staff, and creating cost effective in-house training programmes. Strategic skills for media growth and market positioning are also covered.

Note: Print copies of this publication are no longer available. It may still be available by contacting the Rhodes Journalism and Media Studies Department.
