African development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

SummaryText
This publication is part of a series of Portuguese-language training materials produced during "Strengthening Democracy and Governance through Development of the Media in Mozambique", a United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO)/United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) media development project that ran from 1998 to 2006 in Mozambique.

According to the publication, community radio is a unique local force for development. As part of the project strategy, UNESCO helped organise the work of the community radio stations it supports into "editorial groups". These were groups of community programme producers, who produce programmes related to the special interests of the community which had been identified in initial audience research. The organisers state that one of the most important areas of interest identifed was farming. This manual was designed to assist editorial groups in producing programmes on agriculture for community radio. The programming aimed to provide information and create a forum for farmers to share their experiences and ideas. The manual is designed to be a step-by-step tool to guide editorial groups to identify and respond to the needs of farming communities.
