African development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at lainiciativadecomunicacion.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

The “I” Stories

SummaryText
As part of the annual 16 Days of Activism, each year since 2005 Gender Links and partners work with survivors of gender violence and reformed perpetrators to write their own personal stories, with the aim of bringing these voices to the public to raise awareness. Each “I” Story shares the personal experience of someone who has, in some way, been touched by gender-based violence. Gender violence can take many forms- physical, sexual, emotional and economic. According to the organisers, first hand accounts are one of the most compelling ways of bringing home the reality of gender violence, its consequences, public and private responses.

The “I Stories” are published in illustrated booklet format, distributed to mainstream media, and recorded for audio distribution for use by radio stations. According to the organisers, "The stories are told simply and honestly by ordinary people in their own words. This booklet is a unique compilation of the authentic voices of those in our community who have spoken out, and who in doing so have opened the way for others to do the same."
