African development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

SummaryText
Communication for Change (C-Change) has created this learning package for facilitated, face-to-face workshops on social and behaviour change communication (SBCC). It is designed for staff of health programmes in small- and medium-sized organisations with varying degrees of experience in planning or implementing SBCC programmes.

The package, which includes a series of 6 modules for program staff, is (as of January 2010) being field-tested in Kenya, Nigeria, and South Africa. The Introductory Module outlines the overall SBCC framework. Each of the next 5 modules focuses on one distinct step of the SBCC planning process:
  1. Understanding the Situation
  2. Focusing and Designing
  3. Creating
  4. Implementing and Monitoring
  5. Evaluating and Replanning

The modules rely on and feature a number of practical SBCC tools, using actual field examples for teaching. Facilitators may tailor each module to the profile of learners as well as to the time available. The format is designed to make it easy for facilitators to substitute examples from their own professional experience to help make the curriculum relevant for all participants. The goal is to create opportunities for participants to apply what they learn to their own SBCC programmes.
