African development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

SummaryText
Communication for Change (C-Change), implemented by AED with support from United States Agency for International Development (USAID), has created this learning package for facilitated, face-to-face workshops on social and behaviour change communication (SBCC). The package for communication practitioners working in development includes a series of 6 modules and accompanying facilitator guides for each module. The modules:
  • Focus on essential SBCC competencies during each of the 5 key stages (see below) to develop an effective SBCC programme;
  • Rely on and feature a number of practical SBCC tools;
  • Use actual field examples for teaching; and
  • Create opportunities for participants to apply what they learn to their own programmes.
The C-Modules contain:
  • A Practitioner's Handbook with the content of Modules 0-5: The Introduction Module 0 outlines the overall SBCC framework, including the 5-step C-Planning Process for SBCC. Each of the next 5 modules focuses on one distinct step of the SBCC planning process, including the following:
    1. Understanding the Situation
    2. Focusing and Designing
    3. Creating
    4. Implementing and Monitoring
    5. Evaluating and Replanning
  • An accompanying Facilitator's Guide to provide guidance, tips, and examples for facilitating the module (Facilitator's Preparation and Facilitator's Guide for Modules 0-5)
  • Additional Resources
This package is designed for staff of development programmes in small and medium-sized organisations with varying degrees of experience in planning or implementing SBCC programmes. Facilitators may tailor each module to the profile of learners as well as to the time available. The format is designed to make it easy for facilitators to substitute examples from their own professional experience to help make the curriculum relevant for all participants.
