African development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Organised by African Media Initiative (AMI) in partnership with the International Center for Journalists (ICFJ), the African Story Challenge is seeking applications to fund great story ideas on business and technology. This is the third round of its pan-African journalism competition. Twenty projects shortlisted for the final prize will be awarded grants of up to US$20,000. These stories should focus specifically on issues such as: employment, innovation and entrepreneurship, corruption and transparency, and investment and incentives. Submissions should include investigative, data-driven stories that employ multiplatform approaches and engage the public through social media and other digital tools.

The goal of The African Story Challenge is to contribute to the building of a strong media sector able to deliver content that matters to the African public. Organisers are looking for compelling, analytical, investigative, and data-driven stories that will help spur better policies and healthier lives, increase transparency, hold officials accountable, and disseminate vital information that will lead to more vibrant communities. The award is encouraging entries that will use creative digital tools like mapping, crowd sourcing, and visualisation to help tell the story. They are also seeking entries that engage in cross-platform approaches and interactive applications that ensure the story reaches as many people as possible on a variety of media devices.
