African development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

African News Innovation Challenge (ANIC) will provide grants from $12,500 to $100,000 for the best projects aimed at strengthening and transforming African news media. This innovation challenge focuses on journalism and the news media. ANIC is looking for digital ideas for improving the way that news is collected and disseminated. By digital ideas, ANIC mean tools or strategies that use the internet, mobile platforms, data driven journalism, computer assisted reporting, digitally augmented reality, or other electronic means to improve the relevance and impact of news media. Participant’s ideas should be focused on providing pragmatic solutions to real world challenges facing Africa's media.

According to ANIC, this is Africa's first major contest designed to promote the development of digital media products and innovations. The contest is modeled on the Knight News Challenge in the United States. Grantees will also receive technical advice, startup support, and one-on-one mentoring from the world’s top media experts.

Participant’s innovation should fall under the following categories:

  • News gathering
  • Story telling
  • Audience engagement
  • Business of news
