African development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

The Webber Wentzel Legal Journalist of the Year Award recognises print (including online), radio, and television journalism in South Africa that demonstrates outstanding work in the field of legal journalism. According to the Webber Wentzel legal firm, the award "was founded in 1999 to acknowledge the role played by journalists in promoting knowledge of the judiciary and understanding of the country's civil and criminal justice systems."

There are three categories: Print (including Online), Radio and Television, and a R50 000 prize for each category.

The judges are looking for:

  • quality of reporting that demonstrates the ability to understand, interpret, and provide in-depth analysis or comment on legal issues and developments that impact society and people’s lives;
  • balanced and objective reporting and clarity in terms of representing how the given issues impact or affect the future; and
  • ability of the entrant to report fairly and accurately and to assist the public in understanding how the justice system works.
