African development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at lainiciativadecomunicacion.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

SummaryText
This guide was produced to help reduce the spread of HIV among high-risk groups in Tanzania by providing HIV and other health information in small, dynamic, and informal settings from trained facilitators. This guide is particularly intended to be used by people who are away from home for long periods of time, such as people working in the mining industry or long-distance truck drivers. According to the publishers, small group sessions can be used to share information on HIV risk with people who are considered to be at high-risk, such as commercial sex workers, bar workers, truck drivers, food vendors, and others, in the hope that if they have the right information on HIV, they will be able to make informed health choices and avoid contracting HIV or infecting others.

The series of activities in this document can be used to coordinate, facilitate, and evaluate the sessions. The guide advises facilitators that it is important for the facilitator to familiarise themselves with the full guide before undertaking any of the small group sessions. The small group discussions will be held in areas where at risk groups identified are found, such as bars, recreation centers, truck stops, guest houses, community halls, dormitories, and other places where members of the mining industry gather when they are not working in the mines, or places where truck drivers gather when they are not driving. The guide is divided into four sections:
  • Introduction and Facilitator Instructions
  • Programme Sessions (dealing with testing, condoms, alcohol abuse etc.)
  • Facilitator Evaluation
  • Informational Handouts for participants
This manual was developed for the Tanzania Marketing and Communications for AIDS, Reproductive Health, Child Survival and Infectious Diseases (T-MARC) project, a six-year (2004-2010) United States Agency for International Development (USAID) funded project, led by the Academy for Educational Development.
