African development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Power of Story Course (March 25-26 2013)

Location

Johannesburg, South Africa

According to Institute for the Advancement of Journalism (IAJ), stories surround us in the media and in the conversations we share daily. But what is a story? And are the stories we tell really true of our lived experience? These questions have challenged literary theorists since ancient times. This workshop organised by IAJ will examine how one may set about collecting and reporting stories for the media. Whether participants' goal is to observe, entertain, educate, or change people, trainees will learn techniques of story-building using all the elements of narrative: genre, setting, theme, characterisation, plot, and dialogue. The emphasis throughout the workshop is to work with these elements and raise one’s critical awareness of the power of story.

By the end of the course, trainees will be able to:

  • describe classical theories of story from various cultures;
  • develop an improved grasp of story structure, from the 3-act to experimental forms;
  • gain confidence in selecting narrative as a media technique rather than information or attraction (or notices);
  • develop an understanding of how to create stories and use their power;
  • gain a commitment to ethical, credible, and engaging journalistic storytelling; and
  • seek out opportunities in South African and global media for the placement of good stories.
