African development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Stem van Afrika Funding for Community Media

1 comment

Stem van Afrika (SvA) is a Dutch foundation that supports community-based media in Africa. The foundation was established in 1962 by Dutch broadcasters convinced that community radio can make a major contribution to the emancipation of people. SvA is inviting community, local, and associative radio stations, community and associative radio networks, and African organisations developing support programmes to local and community radio stations in Africa to apply for funding. The call for proposals seeks to support projects intending to reinforce the community radio landscape in Africa. Proposed projects must be designed to support a community radio/community initiative, be innovative and/or related to training, and be non-denominational in content and outreach.

SvA will consider projects and programmes if they are related to at least one of the following categories:

  • programme formats;
  • "target" groups;
  • thematic issues;
  • training;
  • technology; and
  • sustainability.

Application Info

Applications are accepted in English, French, or Portuguese.

How to apply:

  • Applicants should use the standard project application form [MS Word format] provided by SvA, available on the SvA website.
  • Project applications may be submitted as attachment by email and sent to Proposal2010@stemvanafrika.nl
  • Applications including the purchase of equipment should be submitted with pro-forma invoices.
  • Applicants, please note: the more concise and logical the project proposal, the fewer inquiries are necessary later on. This shortens the process of decision making.
