African development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at lainiciativadecomunicacion.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Women Meeting the Challenge: A Handbook for Media Leadership

SummaryText
This handbook aims to provide practical solutions to the barriers that hold women back from reaching their leadership potential. It uses recent studies to demonstrate where African women stand as leaders in the media. The handbook relies on the leadership development work of Jerusha Arothe-Vaughan, director of Independent Communication Associates Ltd., who facilitated the CSLI (Carole Simpson Leadership Institute) seminar training.

"While this book is for women, about women and by women, it also is a tool that should be shared with everyone in the newsroom. It is a means by which to change the leadership roles of women in their media houses. The handbook is a tool for awareness of leadership training and capacity building for women, as the key factors in women's empowerment."

Chapters include:
  • What does it take to be a leader?
  • Tools to meet the challenge
  • Assert yourself
  • Creating visibility
  • Knowing your leadership potential and
  • Importance of networking
