Twin Epidemics: The Struggle Against TB and HIV

Twin Epidemics: The Struggle Against TB and HIV is a series of multimedia pieces produced by the Open Society Institute (OSI)'s Public Health Watch Campaign, spotlighting OSI-supported efforts to address the needs of people dually infected with drug-resistant tuberculosis (TB) and HIV in Africa. The campaign works with community groups, public health experts, and human rights advocates to promote policies for treating TB/HIV that respect human rights and are based on scientific evidence.

The Public Health Watch campaign materials include the following.

• Gasping for Air: A video which presents the TB/HIV epidemic in the small southern African nation of Lesotho and explains how significant progress can be made, even in low-resourced settings.
• Struggling with Tuberculosis in Lesotho: A photographic essay/slideshow on a model treatment programme in Lesotho as it addresses the problem of drug-resistant TB.
• Promoting Public Health and Human Rights in Multidrug-Resistant TB Care: Video notes from a panel discussion convened by OSI and the World Health Organization which address the ethical and human rights challenges presented by the growing epidemic of multidrug-resistant TB.
• Amina’s Story: A slideshow/series of photographs taken in Tanzania which was commissioned by OSI to highlight community-based health care for those affected by TB and HIV.
