African development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at lainiciativadecomunicacion.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

There Will Be Elections... An Evaluation of the Local Government Elections in South Africa

SummaryText
Following the 1995/6 local government elections in South Africa, CORE used a consultative approach to conduct an evaluation of the management of those elections. CORE held workshops in each of the nine provinces with key stakeholders in the election process including election administrators, monitors, security services, political parties and civil society organisations. CORE also convened a series of specialist workshops on specific topics such as voter education, the roles and responsibilities of political parties, election administration, problems of holding elections in rural areas, the role of the media, the role of youth, the role of women, and so on.

This volume provides an in-depth analysis of crucial aspects of preparing for and managing elections in South Africa. The lessons and recommendations which emerged are may also be relevant for other emerging democracies.Date published: 1996
