African development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Strengthening Media Response to HIV/AIDS - Mozambique

Strengthening Media Response to HIV/AIDS is an ongoing project working with national and local radio staff in Mozambique to improve radio programmes on HIV/AIDS.
Communication Strategies
The project was developed in Mozambique to help counter what the organisers have called the widespread ignorance of HIV/AIDS in the country through the mass media.

The project began in 2001 in partnership with the National Aids Council (CNCS).The first year's activities included working with radio broadcasters in six provinces. Four training workshops were held for broadcasters to review their progress and learn from their peers.

Five listener surveys into attitudes towards HIV/AIDS and on radio listening preferences have been carried out to inform communication interventions. Radio managers have been targeted to ensure they fully support, and participate in, the process. HIV/AIDS programmes are regularly broadcast in 13 indigenous languages.

In 2004, the project organisers say they are turning their attention to the northern Mozambique, and to radio programming for young people. One project, funded by the Danish government (DAN IDA) will involve young people making radio programmes on HIV/AIDS and related social issues for their peers.
