African development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Streets of Life Radio Drama

Streets of Life (Estrada da Vida in Portuguese) is a serial radio drama designed to tackle violence against women in Angola and show how ordinary people can have a say in local politics. A project of the Forum of Women Journalists for Gender Equality, in collaboration with BBC Media Action and funded by the Governance and Transparency Fund (GTF) of the Department for International Development and the European Union, the drama blends information and entertainment designed to help people claim their rights.

Communication Strategies

Streets of Life deals with gender issues and local governance. According to the Forum of Women Journalists for Gender Equality, Angolans are coming from a period of war and economic problems, and don’t know about human rights and gender rights. The main goal is to mix information and entertainment to inform people about their rights. Drama was chosen as there are a lot of news programmes in Angola but the language is often too complex to reach some segments of the population. The drama tries to speak in a clear language, and is designed so that people remember what they listen to, because they relate to what the character has said.

The drama focuses on the story of Edna, a single woman in her twenties studying law at college. Even though she comes from a humble background, she has a very strong personality. Edna is the kind of person who says "maybe I was born in a slum but I don’t need to die in these conditions." She tries hard to show how success comes when you make an effort, when you have aims and when you fight for it. Her best friend is a victim of domestic violence. Edna tries to help her friend to fight against that and takes her to seek help at a charity. Edna's father wants to change the political situation but he doesn’t have the necessary legal knowledge. Edna assists as she is studying law at college and together they help people who are hounded by corrupt government officials.
