African development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

SummaryText
This journal presents research information on practices and issues related to the institution and implementation of libraries and information science (LIS) in South Africa. The journal is published twice a year by the Library and Information Association of South Africa (LIASA), who advocate and support the provision of library and information services that aspire to equitable access to information for communities (literate and illiterate) in South Africa.

LIASA believes that this publication should serve and reflect the interests of the South African LIS community across the spectrum of its activities and research. In addition to formal scholarly articles, the editors will strive to identify and solicit articles on issues of practice and controversial matters as they arise. It is intended to actively encourage young writers, researchers and practitioners to share their experiences and findings so that aspects of research, teaching, thinking and practice are brought together through the South African Journal of Libraries and Information Science. Topics that will be examined in the journal include:
  • literacy
  • management
  • children's literature
  • ethics
  • globalisation
  • impact of the digital divide
  • technology
  • communications
  • indigenous knowledge systems
