African development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Breakthrough ACTION and The Communication Initiative ...

Many best wishes. This is a quick introductory note outlining an agreement between Breakthrough ACTION  and The Communication Initiative.

The focus of Breakthrough ACTION is to ignite collective action and encourage people to adopt healthier behaviors (through) scaling up new and hybrid approaches to social and behavior change (SBC). It is designed to implement creative and sustainable SBC programming, nurture SBC champions, mainstream new techniques and technologies, and advocate for strategic and sustained investment in SBC. (
See overview page at this link)

There is a clear desire and intent by Breakthrough ACTION (funded by
USAID and led by Johns Hopkins University Center for Communication Programs, with other partners Save the Children, ideas42, ThinkPlace and Camber Collective  to ensure both that the wider health social and behaviour change field of work benefits from their work and that Breakthrough ACTION is informed by other developments in this field of work.

In order to facilitate that process Breakthrough ACTION has reached an agreement with The Communication Initiative to engage its extensive network and utilize its knowledge platform. Details on The Communication Initiative capacities can be reviewed here.

This work will have the following main elements:

1. A Health Social and Behavior Change theme site that draws all of this knowledge into one distinct space for easy access.

2. The identification, summarizing and publishing of Breakthrough ACTION and other health social and behavior change initiatives in order to inform your work and that of Breakthrough ACTION - for example program initiatives, strategic thinking, theories of change, research and evaluation results and methodologies, support and training opportunities, guides and other resource materials and much else.

3. A series of e-magasines that communicate this knowledge in support of everyone's work.

For now this is just an introductory overview of this work. It is part one of a series of 4 notes over this week that will provide further information and seek your engagement including sharing your experience, knowledge and insight. After those notes we will be providing you with quarterly updates on the work and learning from Breakthrough ACTION in support of your work.

More soon

With many thanks.
