Reporting Redd: A Journalist’s Guide to the Role of Forests in Combating Global Climate Change

This media pack aims to give journalists an overview of a vital issue in global climate change negotiations. REDD is an acronym for reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation in developing countries and is a proposed mechanism to slow the loss of forests, but, according to this document, how it will work in practice is proving "controversial and raising complex and emotive issues of national sovereignty, human rights, big money, and corruption". "Reporting REDD" examines the debates between the different organisations and individuals involved with the project. It also looks at the possible complexities involved: the scale of the mechanism and the difficulties there might be in measuring the amount of carbon being saved.
The media pack is written to give journalists the facts and figures relating to REDD and an examination of the hurdles and competing interests that REDD might encounter. It includes links to further resources, among them:
- Panos London-produced "What's a Forest Worth? Forest-Dependent People and the Possible Effects of REDD", a short film to accompany this media brief.
- A video news release on REDD, "REDD Revolution", which includes interviews with forest communities, campaigners, economists, and politicians. For a copy of the REDD Revolution video news release, email Dina Junkerman at tve: dina.junkerman@tve.org.uk
