African development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Radio, Convergence, and Development in Africa Call for Proposals

0 comments

Canada's Carleton University Centre for Media and Transitional Societies (CMTS), in collaboration with Canada’s International Development Research Centre (IDRC), is calling for research proposals examining the impact of convergence between traditional radio and new information and communications technologies (ICTs) in sub-Saharan Africa. The purpose of this competitive research project is both to generate research and to support African researchers in their efforts to produce rigorous and analytical social science research findings on the ways that radio and the growth and penetration of new ICTs - such as mobile phones, the internet, and other digital technologies - have affected social, cultural, political, and economic development. The fund is designed to support research on collecting baseline data, evidence of outcomes and impacts, crosscutting methodological issues, and future trend analysis.

There are three levels of funding, each with different eligibility criteria:

  • A set of small seed grants at CAD$7,500 each will be awarded to promising graduate students, small organisations, and individual researchers.
  • Grants of CAD$25,000 are open to researchers affiliated with an established organisation.
  • Grants of up to CAD$100,000 are open only to researchers affiliated with an established organisation.

Application Info

The competition is open to researchers and institutions based in Sub-Saharan Africa, as defined by the African Union. Non-African nationals who live in sub-Saharan Africa and work for African-based organisations are also eligible to apply. Organisations based in non-African countries that have regional offices in Sub-Saharan Africa are also eligible to apply as long as the research is conducted in Africa and the funds flow to the African regional office. To be eligible, an applicant must:

  • be affiliated with an institution or organisation or with a consortium of institutions based in Sub-Saharan Africa. These institutions or organisations can be from academia, the public sector, private sector, or civil society;
  • remain at the same institution for the entire funding period; and
  • have evidence of current involvement in research activities.

The call for proposals will be run in two stages. 1. Call for concept notes (deadline: January 8 2010): All interested applicants are required to submit a concept note outlining a synopsis of a proposed research idea. All submissions must provide the required information and follow the submission instructions. 2. Call for full proposals (deadline: March 5 2010): Based on the assessment of the concept notes, short-listed applicants will be invited to submit a full proposal.
