After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.
 
Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.
 
We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

"[A]cross development contexts, UNDP has increasingly identified media engagement as a priority for its policy and programmes. UNDP recognises that engaging the media has become indispensable for making progress on inclusive governance, peace and development outcomes and ultimately for achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development." The following media for development projects are being supported by UNDP:

Peace Building in Lebanon, Phase 3 (2014-2021) - The project focuses on addressing the new challenges to civil peace and peace building posed by the Syrian crisis. The focus is on education, media, local-level peace building, and a platform promoting nationwide truth and reconciliation.

Capacity of Civil Society Organizations (2013-2019) - This project seeks to strengthen institutional capacity of civil society and media organisations in Myanmar to provide community services, including civic and legal awareness and advocacy on human rights and oversight.

ACT-MANAGEMENT PLAN (2005-2016) - The Cyprus Community Media Centre (CCMC) aims to enhance relationships between the mass media and civil society through the provision of community media generated products contributing to reconciliation and diversity.

Social Cohesion Project (2013-2019) - The project supports the creation of a framework for collaborative problem solving and dialogue, including developing a Policy Framework in Malawi. It includes a media skills development and journalism component.

Integrated Governance Programme (IGP) (2012-2016) - UNDP Maldives developed the IGP to consolidate its ongoing support to democratic governance and maintain its relevance in a rapidly evolving political context. The project includes activities to enhance media capacity.

Community Participation and Communication Support Program (2011-2017) - The project aims to scale up community media in Lao PDR and to develop local capacity to sustain community media in the longer term.

Support to Media Development (2013-2018) - This project seeks to support media capacity building and development in Sierra Leone. It is based on the premise that professional journalism and press freedom are critical for democratic governance and development. (See also here.)

Accountability and Citizen Participation in Sudan (2011-2018) - The purpose of this project is to contribute to the alignment between the development interests of citizens and the political and economic priorities of the State of Sudan by enhancing the capacities of civil society, political parties, the media, and parliaments in the budget process.

Boosting the Media Sector for Greater Peace and Stability (2018-2019) - This project aims to contribute to institutional stabilisation of the media sector in Guinea Bissau by helping create better conditions for journalists to perform their role in a democratic society in a more professional and responsible manner. Accountability and Engagement (2019-2023) - This project provides support to Rwanda Governance Board to generate evidence for service delivery and further engagement on findings of the Citizen Report Card (CRC). It includes building capacity of media institutions to reinforce their technical capacity to increase access to quality information and promote active participation of citizens in public processes.

Deepening Democracy through Strengthening Citizens Participation and Accountable Governance (DDAG) (2013-2018) - This is a joint UN flagship programme whose purpose is to deepen democracy and to strengthen inclusive citizen participation and accountability in governance in Rwanda. It places special emphasis on media-sector reforms to enhance accountability, as well as gender and human rights as tools to strengthen citizen participation. Contact: Nadine U. Study and Research on Election Media Coverage for 2017 (2017-2018) - This initiative involved conducting of media monitoring for 2017 Local Self Government Elections in Georgia to assess media performance during elections. Study and Research on Election Media Coverage 2018 (2018-2019) - The overall objective is to contribute to a peaceful, free and credible media environment during the 2018 presidential elections in Georgia. (See also here.) Contact: Ana Dabrundashvili, Project Manager ana.dabrundashvili@undp.org

Communication for Development (C4D) (2008-2018) - Activities include capacity building for journalists, training and mentorship programmes being implemented by the Media Council in Kenya, finalisation of the generic C4D curriculum by the University of Nairobi, and support to the Government on media policy formulation and self regulation by media owners. Increase Access to Quality Information (2019-2023) - The project aims to ensure that the Media High Council in Rwanda have enhanced capacity to ensure gender accountability through gender mainstreaming in the media sector. It is also designed to ensure that media institutions have reinforced technical capacity to increase access to quality information and promote citizen active participation in public processes.
