African development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

Looking for Busi [film]

By Robyn Hofmeyr

From the Summary

"This is a documentary of a fifteen-year-old 's journey to take control of her life. Abandoned by her mother when she falls pregnant, even before testing positive for HIV, she must depend on the help of extended family and friends. Life starts to look up when Busi is chosen both for a mother-to-child drug trial and to be the subject of a TV documentary. But after the television programme is aired on South African TV exposing her HIV status to the world, she disappears. Desperately worried, the filmmaker and her best friend go looking for her.

The viewer is pulled into every aspect of Busi's world and gets to know her aunt Danisela, her grandmother Gogo Zulu, her HIV-positive counselor Florence and many others. Each person has a different perspective about Busi's needs, where she is and about doing the right thing."
