After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.
 
Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.
 
We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

The Centre for African Family Studies is organising this one-week course to build the capacity of non-profit organisations in knowledge management by equipping participants with the knowledge, information, and skills to develop and carry out an effective knowledge management strategy. By the end of this course, participants will be able to discuss the organisational benefits of knowledge management; carry out a knowledge audit; develop systems to share best-practices between staff; develop systems for codifying, storing, and sharing knowledge; design, develop, and implement a cost-effective knowledge management strategy; and measure a knowledge management strategy for impact.
The course will focus on the following topics:

  • The concept and principles of knowledge management
  • Conducting a knowledge audit
  • Identifying knowledge gaps and barriers
  • Improving research and knowledge generation
  • Systems for capturing tacit knowledge for documentation
  • Systems for codifying, storing, and retrieving knowledge
  • Using communities of practice
  • Documenting and sharing best practices and lessons learned
  • Information dissemination in a global environment
  • Defining KM roles and responsibilities
  • Aligning knowledge management to a strategic plan
  • Measuring the impact of knowledge management activities.
