Kicking AIDS Out: Through Movement Games and Sports Activities
SummaryText
This 48-page book is a collection of methods, aids, ideas, and experiences of how coaches can confront HIV and AIDS in and through sports. The central issue discussed is the strategy for adapting and creating movement games to help participants learn to develop "Kicking AIDS Out" (KAO) skills through a combination of sport and life skills. The book presents practical guidelines on how to use sports in information work on HIV and AIDS. It is designed to promote volunteer work among young people and explains how to combine sport skills and life skills. According to the publication, sport skills provide better health and more fun on the playing field or in the schoolyard. Life skills information includes how to avoid stigmatisation of people living with and affected by HIV and AIDS, as well as important information about HIV/AIDS. It contains illustrations to help coaches understand the proposed activities and how to make their own games into KAO games.
The following areas are covered in the book:
This book is mainly for instructors of peer coaches or trainers of trainers - especially those instructors who are peer coaches themselves. Parts of the book are useful for KAO activity leaders. However, this book can also be of use for anyone involved in promoting HIV/AIDS education in sports activities and programmes, such as physical education teachers and sports teachers in schools.
Note: The Kicking AIDS Out Network has developed a newer version of the manual called the Kicking AIDS Out Training Manual. It contains contributions from all their member organisations who shared their experience and expertise in order to develop a generic guide for peer education among young people through a working group. The manual has been sponsored by the Norwegian Agency for Development Cooperation (NORAD), through the Norwegian Olympic Committee and Confederation of Sports (NIF), and co-sponsored by Commonwealth Games Canada and UK Sport. To obtain a copy of the newer version or to become a member, associate, or partner, please see contacts below.
