African development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at lainiciativadecomunicacion.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

The International Women's Media Foundation (IWMF) is accepting applications from women journalists to participate in one of two international reporting fellowships, tentatively scheduled to take place February 13-23, 2015. The fellowship, which forms part of IWMF's African Great Lakes Reporting Initiative, will lead delegations of six journalists each to Rwanda and Uganda to cover underreported economic and rural development issues.

The African Great Lakes Reporting Initiative is funded by the Howard G. Buffett Foundation and seeks to expand reporting initiatives in Africa’s Great Lakes region. The award will provide training and support for women journalists, as well as opportunities for international correspondents to work in areas of East and Central Africa that receive limited coverage abroad.

According to the IWMF, "The first three days of the fellowship will consist of comprehensive security training and briefings by regional experts. Journalists will participate in one week of in-country independent reporting as well as group activities, and will have the opportunity to interact with key multi-sector stakeholders as well as local journalists."
