After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.
 
Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.
 
We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

The West Africa Civil Society Institute (WACSI) is calling for applications to participate in this 3-day course . The course is designed as an introductory course to equip participants with fundamental concepts, basic knowledge, and skills on policy advocacy, the policy making cycle, planning for advocacy campaigns and policy influencing strategies. It seeks to equip them with techniques that will enable them to demand for a more open and participatory governance system in West Africa.

According to WACSI, there are a variety of advocacy strategies, such as discussing problems directly with policy makers, delivering messages through the media, or strengthening the ability of local organisations to advocate. This course provides a step by step guide for planning advocacy initiatives, as well as advice for successful implementation.

At the end of the course, participants will be able to:

  • clarify and define the main terms and concepts associated with advocacy, engagement, public policy;
  • articulate the key purposes of the policy making cycle;
  • expose participants to a range of policy communication and advocacy tools;
  • lobby and negotiate effectively in a policy influencing process; and
  • monitor and evaluate advocacy processes.

Registration information:

This course has been designed for staff that are new to policy advocacy and engagement. Practitioners working within the sector who have little or no policy advocacy experience should attend this course, as do managers who are managing staff responsible for policy advocacy interventions.
