After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.
 
Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.
 
We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

In response to the statement "people with HIV/AIDS should be moved away," 81% of all Choose Life readers disagreed, in contrast to 63% of youth not reading Choose Life. 30% of Choose Life readers said they would use the same cutlery as someone with AIDS; 14% of youth not reading Choose Life said they would do so. 84% of Choose Life readers disagreed with the statement "boys have a right to sex if they buy their girlfriends gifts", as opposed to 70% of youth not reading Choose Life.
Increased Discussion of Development Issues
Three in five youth in Botswana (59%) reported that they had discussed the booklet with someone.
Access
Soul City's Institute for Health and Development Communication (Soul City: IHDC) distributed 1,331,000 copies of the Choose Life booklet to young people in Lesotho, Swaziland, Botswana and Namibia in 7 different languages. In Botswana, one edition was published in English with some Setswana translations; in Swaziland, an English and a siSwati edition were published; in Lesotho, an English and a Sesotho edition were published; and in Namibia, 3 editions were published (Afrikaans, with key word translations in Otjiherero; English, key word translations in Lozi and Rukwangali; and Oshivambo).

The booklet was distributed to 400,000 junior and secondary schools in Botswana, as well as to young people affiliated with teacher training colleges, district youth offices, BP filling stations, roadshows, and the Botswana College of Distant Ed. In Botswana, 79% of those addressed by the project saw the booklet; 62% read it, or read parts of it; 31% still had a copy one year later. In Swaziland, the booklet reached 116,000 schools, including 177 high schools and Tinkundla Centres and clinics. In Lesotho, the booklet was delivered to 435,000 schools (including 1050 primary schools and 154 high schools). 165,000 copies of the booklet were included in selected maize bags that sell in rural communities. Out-of-school recipients were associated with NGOs, Maseru Roller Mills, district hospitals, and adolescent centres. Finally, students in 300,000 Namibian schools, of which 170,000 were school learners, received the booklet. In addition, youth affiliated with Namcol, Red Cross Regional Centres, post offices, community libraries, and clinics accessed the materials.
