African development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

SummaryText
This toolkit, published by Raising Voices, is intended to support violence-free learning environments within which students develop their skills and confidence to grow into creative, constructive, and thoughtful members of their community. The Toolkit comes in three packages:
  • Introductory Package introduces educators to the Good School Toolkit and provides tools to inform decisions to embark upon the journey to creating a Good School. It also gives educators a taste of what is to come and equips them with resources to share with community members which will help encourage them to join the project.
  • Package Two assists educators in preparing a team of community members who are dedicated to joining them on the journey to creating a Good School. It will also help students to create a strong foundation for the process by introducing preliminary activities designed to spark people's interest, while providing tools to measure and celebrate change. Package Two also explores what it means to be a good teacher, and introduces new skills and methods that create motivated teachers who excel as educators and take pride in their work.
  • Package Three addresses discipline and helps educators to establish a school culture and disciplinary methods that support positive discipline instead of corporal punishment. It also introduces educators to the importance of creating a Good Learning Environment, in which students feel a sense of dignity, security, value, and voice. Finally, educators will be guided through a series of steps to think about the future, plan for the way forward, and measure and celebrate their success.
Each package also includes resource materials such as cartoon booklets and posters.
