African development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

SummaryText
This 85-minute film depicts humankind's confrontation with the global AIDS epidemic. The film's basic themes include: the underlying causes of AIDS; the relationship between health, dignity, and human rights; and the universal need for action, compassion, and commitment to counter what has become the worst plague in human history.

"Subjects and story-lines encompass the broad spectrum of the global AIDS experience and include people with HIV/AIDS from all walks of life; AIDS children and orphans and those caring for them; doctors, nurses, and social workers; human rights advocates; and prominent scientists, economists, researchers, government leaders, and NGO officials.

More than 50 women, men, and young people have been interviewed or profiled in the following regions and locations: Cambodia, Haiti, India, South Africa, Switzerland, Nepal, Uganda, Ukraine, and various locations in the United States including New York City, Kansas City, San Francisco, and Cambridge.

The film features interviews with prominent individuals from all walks of life including The Dalai Lama, Kofi Annan, and Bono. It contains stories, portraits, and vignettes of children, women, and men living with AIDS on four continents. According to the producers, "breathtaking cinematography by Richard D. Young... celebrates human dignity, even as it bears witness to immense human suffering."
