Child Sexual Abuse - A Discussion Tool
Image

SummaryText
This learning tool, consisting of a 15-minute DVD and a discussion guide, seeks to highlight the issue of child sexual abuse and how it affects children.
The DVD contains extracts from Soul Buddyz TV Series 1, which tells the story of Avril, a teenager who was sexually abused by her uncle as a child. Many years later, her uncle comes to stay with the family again. Avril tries to tell her mother what happened, but Avril's mother struggles to believe that her own brother could have done what Avril says he did.
The accompanying booklet seeks to provide information and to support discussion and debate about the story in the DVD. It covers issues such as what is child abuse, who commits sexual abuse, who can be sexually abused, what communities can do, and what to do when a child reveals that they have been abused. The guide offers questions that will guide discussions, and offers a list of places to get help, which include the Thuthuzela Care Centres, which is a key partner in this campaign.
The learning tool can be used in life orientation lessons at school or in a group or club and can be used to stimulate ideas for activities at school, e.g. during Child Protection Week. It can also be used together with the activity book "Make Children Safe" (see Related Summary at bottom of page).
