After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.
 
Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.
 
We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

10th International Language and Development Conference (Oct 15 -17 2013)

British Council South Africa is organising a 3-day conference under the theme Opportunity, Equity and Identity beyond 2015. The conference will firstly focus on lessons, observations, and themes developed from earlier Language and Development conferences, and how these relate to the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). It will also highlight the role of language in supporting development from 2015-2035. The conference will focus on a range of language-related issues common but not unique to developing countries across the African continent and seeks to address the issues of world, national, second, and minority languages in relation to economic, social, and cultural development, language policy, and pedagogy.
The conference sub-themes are:

  • Language policy
  • Language, literacy and education
  • Language in socio-economic development
  • Language and cultural identity.

Registration information:
British Council South Africa invites academics, students, teachers, ELT professionals, development practitioners, media, and the general public to attend and contribute to the discussions. Registration fees are are ZAR 2,250 and include conference fees, teas and coffees, site visits and the Welcome Reception for all delegates.
Conference session proposals for both key note presentations and parallel sessions linked to the themes of the conference are welcome. Both individuals and teams are invited to submit proposals. The deadline for submissions is May 31 2013.
