After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.
 
Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.
 
We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

The West Africa Peacebuilding Institute (WAPI) 2013 is a three-week intensive training programme, run by the West Africa Network for Peacebuilding (WANEP), which is designed to strengthen the capacity of civil society-based peacebuilding practitioners and institutions in order to promote the development of indigenous responses to conflict. The training covers a range of courses on theories and practice of peacebuilding, dialogue and mediation, women and gender mainstreaming into peacebuilding, youth and peace education, early warning and early response, natural resource conflict management, human security, and peacebuilding.

According to WANEP, six courses will be offered during the three-week period, each week having two 5-day intensive courses running concurrently. The courses are highly interactive and participatory, blending theory and practice in the field of peacebuilding. The major aim of WAPI is to provide knowledge and expertise on peacebuilding and conflict prevention to reduce and eliminate the frequency and severity of violent conflict.

The specific objectives are to:

  • develop action-oriented capacity for conflict transformation and peacebuilding;
  • increase the number of competent, informed, and active peacebuilding practitioners in West Africa and worldwide;
  • provide quality training in peacebuilding at a reduced cost;
  • develop context specific and indigenous models of conflict transformation and peacebuilding that can be integrated with existing models;
  • provide skills to respond to workplace disputes in order to increase productivity for national development; and
  • bridge the gap between policy and practice in peacebuilding.

Admission to WAPI is open to practitioners, students, policy makers and civil society members, business community and individuals interested in peacebuilding, processes of dialogue and mediation, conflict analysis and development, cross-border crimes, electoral disputes management, youth and peace education, conflict prevention and gender, and natural resource conflict management. Each course costs USD 1000, which includes tuition, course material, catering, accommodation, and certification.
