African development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

SummaryText

This toolkit comprises ten tools designed to encourage women's effective campaigning in elections and governance processes. Published by the Campaign for Good Governance (CGG), the National Democratic Institute for International Affairs (NDI), and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the goal of the toolkit is to equip more women candidates in Sierra Leone with the skills needed to build a base of support and win their election. It is based on the idea that democracy must involve women as active and equal participants in public life. As stated in the publication, when more women are elected, governments tend to be less corrupt and more focused on development and improving the lives of citizens. Women bring valuable and needed perspectives and life experiences to government, but currently, they are underrepresented.

The toolkit includes the following contents:

  • Tool #1: Getting ready to run
  • Tool #2: Research
  • Tool #3: Setting a goal
  • Tool #4: Targeting
  • Tool #4: Voter contact
  • Tool #6: Campaign resources
  • Tool #7: Your message
  • Tool #8: Public speaking
  • Tool #9: Engage the media
  • Tool #10: Making it happen!
