African development action with informed and engaged societies
After nearly 28 years, The Communication Initiative (The CI) Global is entering a new chapter. Following a period of transition, the global website has been transferred to the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits) in South Africa, where it will be administered by the Social and Behaviour Change Communication Division. Wits' commitment to social change and justice makes it a trusted steward for The CI's legacy and future.

Co-founder Victoria Martin is pleased to see this work continue under Wits' leadership. Victoria knows that co-founder Warren Feek (1953–2024) would have felt deep pride in The CI Global's Africa-led direction.

We honour the team and partners who sustained The CI for decades. Meanwhile, La Iniciativa de Comunicación (CILA) continues independently at cila.comminitcila.com and is linked with The CI Global site.

SummaryText
The Africa Environment Outlook (AEO) for Youth is the youth version of the AEO report and has resulted from the combined efforts of young people from all over Africa. It is a report of Africa's environment through the eyes of Africa's youth. Apart from drawing extensively from the first Africa Environment Outlook: Past, Present and Future Perspectives Report, this book also contains new contributions from Africa's young people. These contributions have been captured through articles, poems, proverbs, drawings, and paintings.

Chapter 1 focuses on the history of Africa's environment, within a social and economic context. This historical background seeks to contextualise the evolution of environmental management in Africa. Chapter 2 focuses on the state of Africa's environment. It analyses the environmental issues facing the continent, and shares what African youth are saying about these issues. Chapter 3 dwells on human vulnerability to environmental change. It is a reminder that, in essence, whatever happens to the environment happens to people. Chapter 4 explores the future of Africa's environment. It outlines 4 environmental scenarios and discusses the driving forces behind them. The chapter ends with a series of profiles on youth organisations who are taking action.
